5 fuss-free ways to update your beauty bag for winter

by Adriana Donnola, expert beauty stylist

Cold days are made for snuggling but long hot showers and cold, windy, wet weather will play havoc with unprotected skin. Before you know it, skin can turn dry, flaky and red so prevention is best. Swap out summer staples for super-hydrating, bliss-promoting beauty buys to keep the skin on your face soft, supple and strong, all season long.

LIPS

Probably the most common problem during winter is a dry flaky pout which can not only be painful but also annoying when it comes to the smooth base needed for lipstick and gloss. Switch to a moisturising lipstick - I love Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color, $46 from Myer, David Jones, Mecca Maxima - regularly use a lip scrub - I love LUSH Cookie Dough Lip Scrub, $11.95 from Lush - and keep up the hydration - I love Fresh Rose Petal Soft Lip Cream, $34 from Sephora.  Also, keep a barrier-proof, sun-protective version handy for outdoors - I love Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream Nourishing Lip Balm, SPF20, $28, from Myer. Try not to lick lips (I’m guilty too!) as it sucks the moisture out of them. Sigh.

FACE

Slathering on a more hydrating moisturiser to create a barrier from the cold will go a long way in preventing a red nose and cheeks - I love Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator, $60 from Mecca Maxima, Myer. But remember, the sun can still be extremely strong and damaging to our skin, especially when reflected off the snow, so keep using an SPF - I love Natio Rosewater Hydration Moisture Balance Day Cream SPF 50+, $19.95 from David Jones. Winter is the perfect time to try a soothing and hydrating face oil, as your skin needs to be warm and damp, so just out of the shower is perfect. A  couple of drops is all that’s needed and really press into the skin with your fingers. Not all oils are the same though. I really love Jojoba Oil as it’s the one oil (not actually an oil but a wax!)  that suits all skin types. It’s great for acne skin, which is often dehydrated, as well as combination and super dry skin -  I love The Jojoba Company’s Jojoba Oil, $19.95 from Priceline Pharmacy.  A weekly mask will go a long way in keeping skin happy, too - I love The Body Shop’s British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask, $35, from The Body Shop.

BASE

Swap-out your long-wear foundation for a more hydrating version which will lock-in moisture and keep an all-day, soft glow -I love the buildable Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF 25, $93 from Myer, David Jones, Mecca Maxima and the lighter Clarins BB Skin Detox Fluid SPF 25,$50 from David Jones. Switch your concealer to a more hydrating one too which won’t pool under eyes but keep the area crease-free and fresh all day long - I love Benefit Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer, $38, from Sephora, Myer. Fake a summer glow with the perfect pop of colour on cheeks by swapping from a powder to a cream with just the right hint of illumination - I love Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Blush, $65, from David Jones.

EYES

Dial up the hydration to this delicate area and opt for a heavyweight to deal with harsher elements and/or the ski slopes - I love the velvety L’Occitane Immortelle Precious Eye Balm $62, from L’Occtiane, David Jones.  A tubing mascara will keep your eyes panda-free during unexpected downpours and removes easily in the shower with warm water and a gentle rub - I love Clinique Lash Power Mascara, $39 from Mecca Maxima, Myer.

HANDS

These need so much more loving right now considering what they have been through these past months. We still need to be extra vigilant with frequent washing to keep colds and flu germs away so always use a hand moisturiser afterwards. I have one at home - I love the Rose Hand Cream, $29, from Jurlique -  as well as on-the-go - I love the Shea Butter Intensive Hand Balm, $47, from L’Occitane

TOP TIP:

Keep in mind, indoor heating saps moisture from the air which is not good for anyone’s skin. Running a humidifier in your home or office will help put moisture back in the air - I love Natio’s Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser, $59.95, from Myer- as well as creating an inviting, mood-enhancing room by using a few drops of the beautiful L'Occitane Relaxing Essential Oil Blend, $25. Also, drink lots of water during the day in the form of herbal teas to keep skin well hydrated.
