The City of Ryde approved the Development Application in February 2009 for an extension to Macquarie Centre. Managed by AMP Capital Shopping Centres which will also manage the redevelopment Macquarie Centre is co-owned by funds managed by AMP Capital Investors and WestArt Trust.
The redevelopment plan includes the introduction of:
- A full line David Jones
- A new 2 level mall linking the new David Jones with the existing centre and Myer
- A new Fresh Food Market
- Approximately 150 new specialty stores
- A further 1,400 car spaces
On completion, the extension will place Macquarie Centre as one of the top ten centres by size in Australia.

Q: How much will the development cost?
A: Approximately $300 Million
Q: How big will the shopping centre be when the development is completed?
A: The increase in size is expected to be approx 31,800 sqm, taking the centre to a total of approx 130,000 sqm
Q: How many car spaces will be in the centre and will the development affect the existing carparks?
A: The development will add approximately 1400 new car spaces. The total number of car spaces on completion will be in excess of 5000 carspaces.
The development will have some impact on the existing carparks but there are no specific details as to when or which areas at this stage. The aim will be to minimise disruptions for our retailers and customers.
Q: Will the existing centre be refurbished?
A: There are no current plans to refurbish the existing centre as part of this development.
Q: When is the Macquarie Centre expansion going to start?
In an expansion as large as the one planned for Macquarie Centre, there are many stages prior to starting construction. Announcing the Development Application approval in February 2009 was a significant step in this process.
We are now at the next stage, which is ‘behind the scenes’ planning such as design, engineering, construction program, costing, and securing other major retailers
Q: I hear that Myer is leaving and David Jones is coming?
A: Myer will remain at Macquarie Centre in its current location, while a new David Jones will join the centre. Myer will also remain a full-service offering as it is now. David Jones will be built in a new part of Macquarie Centre that currently does not exist, on land adjacent to the carparks fronting Talavera Road.
Q: How many businesses / shops will be affected by the redevelopment?
The redevelopment will include a relocated fresh food area. The retailers who will be directly affected have been kept to date during the long planning process.
Over the next 12 months, prior to any commence of work on site, the design for the development will need to be refined and the design may change. The Centre Management team will continue to keep retailers updated with any changes in the proposed plans.
